FBR-Beige Book-October 19, 2022

October 19, 2022--Overall Economic Activity
National economic activity expanded modestly on net since the previous report; however, conditions varied across industries and Districts. Four Districts noted flat activity and two cited declines, with slowing or weak demand attributed to higher interest rates, inflation, and supply disruptions.

Retail spending was relatively flat, reflecting lower discretionary spending, and auto dealers noted sustained sluggishness in sales stemming from limited inventories, high vehicle prices, and rising interest rates.

Travel and tourist activity rose strongly, boosted by continued strength in leisure activity and a pickup in business travel. Manufacturing activity held steady or expanded in most Districts in part due to easing in supply chain disruptions, though there were a few reports of output declines. Demand for nonfinancial services rose. Activity in transportation services was mixed, as port activity increased strongly whereas reports of trucking and freight demand were mixed. Rising mortgage rates and elevated house prices further weakened single-family starts and sales, but helped buoy apartment leasing and rents, which generally remained high.

IMF-Canada: Staff Concluding Statement of the 2022 Article IV Mission

October 13, 2022--October 12, 2022--Canada has come through the pandemic relatively well and,as a commodity exporter, has been hit less hard than many other countries have been by the war in Ukraine. Nonetheless, inflation is well above target, housing affordability is a major concern following a long boom that may now have peaked, and the pandemic remains a source of risk.

Staff expect a substantial further cooling of the economy, with risks to growth tilted to the downside, and shocks could easily push the economy into a mild recession.

Continued monetary and fiscal tightening will be needed to rein in inflation, and further policy measures-particularly on the supply-side-would help to address housing affordability over time.

Latin America Faces a Third Shock as Global Financial Conditions Tighten

October 13, 2022--Growth momentum continues but scarcer and costlier financing will slow the region's economies, while inflation remains high. Policy priorities are to restore price stability and maintain fiscal sustainability while protecting vulnerable groups

As Latin American countries continue to grapple with the effects of two previous shocks, the pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine, they face a third shock: the tightening of global financial conditions.

Growth momentum is currently positive, reflecting the return of service sectors and employment to pre-pandemic levels, and the overall support of favorable external conditions-high commodity prices, strong external demand and remittances, and rebounding tourism. This has led to several upward revisions to growth this year.
